Jamie Payet – All You Need Is Love

Melbourne Singer Songwriter Jamie Payet pops his cherry with his first ever cover. His spin on his favourite Beatles song. Many people have said this may be one of the best Beatles covers they have heard.

This version has a modern upbeat and happy feel with synths and modern production values while still paying respects to the original song.

It was Recorded at Straw Horse Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Thomas Ross Johansen producer for Angus & Julia Stone, Bruno Mars, Sarah Blasko and many more.

Anthony King, guitarist for Buffy Sainte-Marie lends his licks to this slick homage to the fathers of modern pop and rock.

In These crazy times, maybe “All You Need Is Love”.

Matt Goss – Somewhere to Fall

Matt Goss is leaving Las Vegas. After 10 years, thousands of shows and hundreds of thousands of happy concertgoers, the British musical legend has decided to come home to where it all began and is set to release an incredible new single, ‘Somewhere to Fall’ available now.

‘Somewhere To Fall’ is the first taste of new music from the pop icon and acts as the curtain-raiser to his forthcoming studio album ‘The Beautiful Unknown ‘, which is slated for release towards the end of the year.

‘Somewhere To Fall’ bears all the markings of a true Matt Goss classic with the star’s unmistakable vocal adding raw energy as it soars throughout, creating euphoric pop perfection. The track’s powerful, emotive lyrical impact is woven against modern, contemporary production that feels instantly anthemic and uplifting. This is a song that existing and new fans alike are going to rejoice in. ‘Somewhere To Fall’ marks a return to a genre that made Goss a household name and is a power pop anthem that feels like a hit single in waiting.

Matt explains; “With ‘Somewhere to Fall’, I wanted to write an intelligent pop song, and I’ve disguised quite a heavy lyric within a joyous pop song. ‘Somewhere to Fall’ is about finding a safe place to rest our strength. That might be with a partner, in your home, a park bench, I don’t know where it is. But it’s somewhere for you.”

It was 6 months into the pandemic that realisation eventually pushed Goss back to his first love – songwriting. This next chapter sees Goss baring his soul for the world to see as well as emerging from a turbulent year stronger and more determined than ever before.

Early on Matt had a title for this new collection of songs that were pouring out of him, ‘The Beautiful Unknown’ was a phrase that came from the poetry Goss likes to write away from his musical projects. Explaining the phrase, he says: “We have been conditioned to fear tomorrow, to fear next week, to be fearful of next year certainly. Because there is this unknown energy around all of us – no time more than now. And I’ve been through the ringer during Covid, betrayed by some people, uplifted by others. So,’ The Beautiful Unknown’ is a request to people to come along with this philosophy that tomorrow is going to be a good day and a good place.”

Produced at the storied Record Plant in LA, with additional recording in Nashville, ‘The Beautiful Unknown’ is the album Matt Goss needed to make now.

“I wrote this song called ‘Shipwreck’ at 3am. It’s a song about not wanting to give up, about feeling broken, the analogy of a shipwreck underwater, the image of everything being slowly dismantled by the tide. And I kept writing the next night, and then I called Babyface. And him being a wonderful human being said he loved it and that I should come to his studio in LA and record it.”

That note of encouragement from Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, one of the all-time great producers, un-stoppered a new burst of creativity for Matt Goss. He also began collaborating with Jacob Bunton, the Emmy-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s worked with everyone from Mariah Carey to Steven Tyler, Smokey Robinson to Akon.

Goss will still be based some of the time in Los Angeles, his home (alongside Las Vegas) for almost three decades. But his focus looking ahead is more on working and performing in the UK, the place that rocket-powered the teenage Goss to the top of the charts, cultural phenomenon status and a headline gig at Wembley Stadium – a feat that made Goss the youngest male ever to headline the legendary venue, a record he still holds today.

“I want to go back to my people and to my world,” he concludes. “I have to get back to pop. I’m so happy to say I’ve fallen back in love with pop music, and the power of pop music. There’s no hiding that on this record.”

CORNELL & CARR – WHATCHAWANNA

Cornell & Carr celebrate the release of their new single WHATCHAWANNA their third release for 2021.

“Ironically, this song is all about freedom and throwing caution to the wind.Something nobody has been able to do for quite a while now ” Mike laughs.

But where exactly did the the inspiration come from for “Whatchawanna”?

“We wrote the song way before lockdown was a thing. The song was more reflective of the journey Mike & I were on at the time. We were deep in thought about ” Cornell & Carr ” and the direction we were headed as a duo” Matt says.”We decided the best thing for us to do ,was to be ourselves no matter what and let the music do the talking for us” Mike adds.

“Whatchawanna” comes hot on the heels of the boys previous release “Beertalk”and continues to shape Cornell & Carr as “the feel good” act of 2021.

The song was recorded with well known producer Matt Fell and displays all the wonderful bits and pieces he brings to a song. Especially a country song !

It’s a vast new landscape for artists moving forward with live performance coming to a screaming halt , and the uncertainty of it’s future. Being the main source of income , for independent artists especially , Cornell & Carr are relying on the strength and appeal of the song , as well as a strong fan base for a successful release…just like the old days!

Chalcedony – Shark Eyes

Vancouver, BC based DIY indie label Aura Aurora Records releases debut single “Shark Eyes” by Chalcedony this Friday, September 24th.

The 90s may have happened 30+ years ago, but Chalcedony and Aura Aurora Records’ founder Cate Horsley – along with her cohort & bass player Gillian Callander – are unleashing a musical cauldron of smoke & shimmer which harkens to their muses while leaning towards the future.

Recorded with producer and lead guitarist Felix Fung at Little Red Sounds in Vancouver, BC, “Shark Eyes” is the lead single off of Chalcedony’s forthcoming EP “Do You Really Wanna Know What the Fuck Goes On Inside My Head” which is set for a Spring 2022 release.

WHOOOSH’s Katy Krassner (Simon Le Bon’s podcast co-host) said “Wow wow!!!!” after hearing very early mixes of the EP. Check out the in-depth bio she penned below.

The music video for Shark Eyes drops Friday September 24th and has what Cate describes as a “trippy Forest Witch aesthetic” – just in time for spooky season. The video was produced, filmed and directed by visual artist Chris Rekrutiak of West Coast art collective Black Parachutes – who also created the single art from a still. “I wanted to capture the band at night lit by spotlights which created noisy textures and moody shadows. I used tangible filters on the lights and lens to create natural effects…fragmented light and refracted flairs, which are influenced by the lyrical content and are layered with floral fabric. The video is grunge magic, you have spotted the coven and are left spellbound having witnessed the supernatural.” shared Rekrutiak.

Georgia Straight and NOW Magazine’s Mike Usinger had this to say upon seeing an early cut of the video “magickal!”. Sounds like Black Parachutes nailed it on the head.

For those who love a good Easter Egg, the video was filmed on location at Klee Wyck Park, which has a storied history. The location was selected not only for its variety of natural backdrops, but for its palpable spirit. Having been a much-loved community site that was gifted by Dr. Ethlyn Trapp, to be utilized for the arts. Klee Wyck, also happened to be the nickname given to renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr, by the First Nations people of Ucluelet. Klee Wyck means the “Laughing One”.

The video will be released on Aura Aurora Records YouTube channel.

Chalcedony is currently busy rehearsing the EP tracks along with 3 new songs and a secret special cover tribute to support the upcoming EP release. The live incarnation of the band features Cate (vocals/baritone), Gillian (bass/vocals), Felix (lead guitar) along with drummer Phil Filion and back up singer Rachel Layne who also performed on the recordings. Stay tuned for dates.

Chalcedony is set to record three more songs this winter and will be shooting the music video for follow up single “Permanent Marker” very soon.

Elton John & Dua Lipa – Cold Heart (PS1 Remix)

A late contender to the song of the summer discourse, “Cold Heart” is almost a mad libs of pop music: What happens when you take one of the greatest hitmakers of all time (and several of his songs), pop’s current It Girl and a much-loved Australian dance music trio? You get a roller rink-ready jam that feels as if it’s been around for decades. PNAU provides the four-on-the-floor backing track to a remix that seamlessly splits vocal duties between modern disco queen Dua Lipa and Elton John; she sings the refrain of “Rocket Man” while the latter lends vocal samples from “Sacrifice,” “Kiss the Bride” and “Where’s The Shoorah?” It’s a song of flips that feels warm and familiar, as if your best friends were standing at the door to the dance club, pulling back a curtain and welcoming you inside.

Paul Kelly – Every Step Of The Way

Paul Kelly today announces the release of a new song, “Every Step Of The Way”.

Paul wrote the deeply emotive song a year ago after seeing champion AFL footballer Eddie Betts bare his soul on national TV, talking about the racism he’s experienced on and off the field over the years.

“Eddie Betts has brought joy to me and so many others with the amazing feats he’s performed on the field for 17 years. But he’s shown even more class and courage off the field in talking about the deep hurt of everyday racism. Eddie keeps educating.” says Paul Kelly.

Released with the support of Eddie Betts, the song highlights the ongoing issue of deeply rooted everyday racism that we continue to struggle with in Australia.

Says Eddie Betts of the song: “I was so honoured when Paul reached out to me with a song that he had written from his heart. He has always empowered us mob with his music and his authentic and heartfelt collaborations have always been enjoyed by myself and all my family for many years. I feel proud to have this song written for me by someone so respected here in Australia and someone who has always stood in solidarity with us mob – this song means a lot to me”

Eli Greeneyes – She Don’t Care

Eli Greeneyes is exactly the kind of artist we need in 2021 – eccentric, exciting, guitar-driven pop reminiscent of classics Oasis and Something For Kate but also modern pop rulers Yungblud and even Billie Eilish – and today, he has announced his electric new single and video She Don’t Care. The WA-based musician has also collaborated with Perth hip hop royalty DRAPHT on two singles on his new album Shadows and Shinings (also released today) and Eli Greeneyes will be joining DRAPHT on the road for his extensive 13 WA-date album tour in September, October and November this year.

She Don’t Care features so much of what we already know we love about Eli Greeneyes, but with plenty of innovation to spark a thrill upon every new listen. It’s guitar-driven, powerful pop, with a carefully written topline, empassioned lyrics, and an absolutely killer mix. It’s like a track from the early 2000s, written for a 2021 audience. Speaking on the inspiration behind She Don’t Care, Eli Greeneyes says, “She Don’t Care is about someone from my past who came along at a time when I was having a lot of mental health issues. Their intentions were extremely different to mine and I was listening to them too much instead of trusting my own intentions and instincts! I lost myself. When I wrote it I thought it was their fault, but now I realise that I also played a part in letting it take that direction. I had to write this song to gain back my true ‘not taking shit’ self.”

The video for She Don’t Care is overflowing with attitude, and it’s the perfect visual representation of the frustration and angst behind the song itself. Eli Greeneyes sings directly to the camera, walking towards us while a woman points and yells right up in his face. The confrontation is real, but the resolve

that Greeneyes has developed through the catharsis of this song is real too. Speaking simply, he refects on the idea behind the video clip, and the team who made it happen, “The concept was created by my friends James Mooney, Ben Matei and I. We wanted it to be predominantly a performance based video with an underlying simple narrative of self destruction and attracting the wrong people in your life… Everyone involved with the clip is creative in their own light with something to say and achieve. They are all my best friends who I want to take on this journey.”

Produced alongside Mark McEwan (Karnivool, Drapht), She Don’t Care is a brilliant example of an artist who is totally in control of the process, and completely enamoured by the idea of creating new songs and new sounds. Not only is Eli Greeneyes producing killer tracks for himself, but he’s also collaborating with other artists, including DRAPHT, and sharing his high production skills with his wider community. Speaking of community, Eli Greeneyes is pumped to get back on the stage and perform for his fans, as he reflects, “My shows are an opportunity to meet and understand my fans with what they connect with the most about my music. What am I saying that makes them feel heard and understood? That all comes down to singing the lyrics for me. Expressing them in that up close and personal way so the story hits straight to the heart.”
