You Am I – The Waterboy

You Am I release new single from forthcoming studio album

“Edinburgh, Galway, Nashville, Ulladulla / Breakin’ my heart / In four places.”

The lines are from The Waterboy, released today via Caroline Australia, the first taste of new music from You Am I’s forthcoming 11th studio album. You Am I fans know how many great songs Tim Rogers has written since the band released their debut album Sound As Ever in 1993. This one is right up there with them.

The Waterboy is a song about inspiration, being lifted up by a song, wondering if and how there was still a way to find a way forward in music. The conclusion is there for all to hear in the song – “Ventricle, aorta, muscle and blood / Building a heart in four places”.

Rogers says: “On the Waterboys album Modern Blues I found a Mike Scott song called I Can See Elvis. It just killed me, I couldn’t stop listening to it. Mike is a big-hearted person, he really puts it all out there and I like that. I was on the New South Wales south coast listening to a Scottish guy living in Ireland singing about Elvis and that led to the four places line.”

Rogers sent the song to You Am I guitarist Davey Lane, who says: “The first time I heard the song it hit me right in the guts. It packs such an emotional punch.”

The band was separated by the pandemic, with Lane and Rogers in Melbourne and bassist Andy Kent and drummer Russell Hopkinson in Sydney. They couldn’t meet so they moved things forward the only way they could. Rogers and Lane recorded a demo of The Waterboy in Melbourne to send to their bandmates.

Kent and Hopkinson recorded parts in a Sydney studio and what they sent back was like a shot of adrenaline. Rogers says: “What they did was very different to what I had imagined for the song and made it so much better.”

He continues, “The Waterboy began as a folk tune set to fingerpicking but when peak “pining” for our band hit I imagined being in a room together and changed the whole feel of the toon. Typically, what Russ, Davey and AK came back with eviscerated all my daydreamin’s and replaced them with jumpin round the room enthusiasms.”

With their Enmore Theatre, Sydney show confirmed for Thursday April 15, the band is understandably excited about playing live again, after a Covid induced layoff of some 18 months or more. As Rogers says, “Who wants solo fingerpickin when you have thunderous friends? Not this ol’ showgirl. I felt my heart being replaced. In all four places. 3000 plus shows and there’s a lotta memories but the reason you wake up is for the NEXT one. I’ve day dreamt and night tussled thinking about this show in ways that have ruined three sets of linen. We wanna be together. Come join the band.”

Andy Kent concurs: “The Enmore Theatre stage holds some very special memories for us as a band. So to be able to put 2020 well behind us all and step back out there to share a night of loud rock and roll with our strong, faithful and beautiful audience is something we are very much looking forward to. GBTFLoU!”

And with the prospect of their new album dropping later this year, Hopkinson says: “There is a reason why this band has been together for a long time and it’s not just because we are really good friends. We’re resilient to the things that go on outside the band, for better or worse.

“There was an idea that we would be able to be together at some point to finish the record. Fate had a way of making sure that didn’t happen. Yet we’ve made an album since the last time we were all together in a room, made the best of the situation to create this piece of art.

“It has been a cathartic experience which is what we all needed after a year when those have been few and far between if you are a touring musician.”

Sheppard – ‘M.I.A’

The Australian pop powerhouse drop their third album alongside a new single & video ‘M.I.A’.

Exactly one year to the day since their year-long ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’ project began, with the release of the first single ‘Don’t Believe In Love’, Sheppard have finally unveiled their third pop masterpiece in all its glory, alongside a brand new single and music video for ‘M.I.A’.

With a song unmasked every month throughout in what was a tumultuous year, fans have taken a journey through love, loss, pain, joy, heartbreak, humour and more, with tracks including ‘Symphony’ and ‘Learning to Fly’ which have added to the band’s already impressive swag of radio hits and lit up airwaves across Europe, Latin America and more.

With the track ‘Solid Gold’ chosen for the US NBC broadcast of the 2021 Olympics and the band’s stunning performance at the 2020 AFL Grand Final still fresh in minds, ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’ is the perfect insight into a band celebrating who they are and standing firm in the face of adversity to bring positivity and joy to their fans around the globe.

The new single ‘M.I.A.’ is indicative of the album more broadly, an upbeat stomper preaching self-determination and the overall message of ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’: living your life on your own terms.

The album comes off the back of their 2018 ARIA #1 album ‘Watching The Sky’ as well as five gold, platinum and multi-platinum releases, including the worldwide smash hits ‘Geronimo’ and ‘Coming Home’. Proudly still based in Brisbane and taking on both the industry and life on their own terms, the Sheppard siblings have settled into a genuine space on their new album, presenting the music they want in the way they choose and opening themselves up to fans like they never have before.

“The release today of ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’ feels like the end of a journey as well as the opening of a new door to the future,” said George Sheppard. “As a band and as siblings, this new album has been a real journey of growth, bringing our fans along for the ride as each single has been revealed and shown a new side to who we are. Whether it’s been coming to terms with years of global touring, figuring out who we are as people in the public eye, or simply discovering who we are and what we want to say as musicians, ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’ has been about that discovery. We know that so many of our fans have been on that same journey with us over the last twelve months as the rolling out of the album has coincided with such a tumultuous time of self-discovery for all of us in world history.”

Whether through the ubiquitous ‘Geronimo’, Amy Sheppard’s inspirational ‘Kiss My Fat Ass’ campaign against body shaming, George’s famous entry to Rock In Rio via zipline or their tours with artists like Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Keith Urban and Elton John, Sheppard are simply a Brisbane family taking life as it comes and letting the world in on their incredible journey.

“In the end, on our journey so far we’ve learned that there’s only two things in life you can control– your attitude and your art and with ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’ we’re proud of what we have produced and we look forward to what comes next now it’s found its place in the world with our fans,” said George Sheppard. “We are eternally grateful for everyone across the world who have chosen to be on this positive journey with us.”

Sheppard will celebrate the release of their third studio album tonight, with an exclusive performance at Brisbane’s iconic Fortitude Music Hall in their hometown of Brisbane.

As a special treat for fans, Sheppard’s one-off performance will also be filmed and beamed around the world, for fans from LA to Tokyo, who are unable to secure a ticket to see the show in person.

The video for “To The Island” can be seen HERE and was filmed at various locations including New Zealand, Los Angeles and Ireland with Neil Finn and Mark Simon Brown serving as directors.

The band also begins their “To The Island” tour in New Zealand March 4th. The tour and new music feature founding members Neil Finn and Nick Seymour along with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom, guitarist and singer Liam Finn and his younger brother, drummer Elroy Finn.

Finn explains, “I’ve always been afraid of just repeating the same formulas, and somehow this feels like a fresh and authentic way to re-approach Crowded House today with an awareness of all our history and where, how and why it began in the first place. The original band mentality and philosophy in still in there, especially with Mitchell now part of it again, working in a different way along with Nick and I.” At the same time Finn clearly treasures all the new energy and talent brought to the party by Liam and Elroy.

We then spent our strangest year, 2020, at distance from each other but connecting daily, swapping files and making those tracks complete. We’re so excited and grateful to be back in one room together now, rehearsing, first to play live in front of audiences in NZ and soon we hope for the rest of the world,” said Neil Finn.

Upsahl – STOP!

Rising indie-pop star UPSAHL releases new single ‘STOP!’ featuring bassist Blu de Tiger.

The single arrives only months after the release of UPSAHL’s new EP “Young Life Crisis” which received critical acclaim including from NME and Nylon, as well as praise from Billie Eilish for two singles ‘12345Sex’ and ‘Drugs’.

An ode to the excitement and anxiety tied to attraction, “STOP!” is UPSAHL at her best, complete with stellar production, an irresistible beat, and her signature unfiltered lyricism.

About the track, UPSAHL says “It’s a sexually empowering song about the feeling of attraction. Like you’re so attracted to somebody that your heart might STOP! I’m unapologetic about being a sexual person, so here’s a song about being horny and the thirst for another person”.

UPSAHL is quickly becoming renowned for her ironic and biting lyrics, with ‘STOP!’ no exception. Her lyrics have come to life over the last few months, including Dork Magazine’s huge Homeschool Festival line-up headlined by Love Fame Tragedy and an EP release day livestream via her YouTube channel.

With a distinct sound rooted in R&B, Becca leans into her Samoan heritage with powerful gospel choir vocals and tranquil island sounds, while her Indigenous roots are evident on each song through storytelling and poignant self-reflection.

Bakar – Play

Bakar continues his string of releases with new single ‘Play’. The London artist – who over the last few years has become one of the freshest and most vital new voices in UK music

Produced by Bakar and longtime collaborator Zach Nahome, ‘Play’ continues to build on the global success of 2019’s “Will You Be My Yellow” EP and its standout sleeper hit “Hell N Back”, which has been streamed over 100 million times to date globally and is accredited ARIA Gold.

Much of Bakar’s music pays tribute to classic songwriting, full of warmth and wordplay. But Bakar’s is an undeniably contemporary take, in part informed by his first generation British experience (“I make black music. We’re hip hop kids – everything comes from that place”) and a network of likeminded global collaborators and peers: whether collaborating with Kenny Beats, Dominic Fike and BENEE or absorbing knowledge from the likes of Skepta, A$AP Mob or Virgil Abloh. In contrast, he hasn’t had a phone for two years so he can always be focused on songwriting rather than social media, instead spending his time writing songs on the move, whether on the tube or walking the streets.

Meanwhile, Bakar continues to work on a new album. The follow up to Badkid, his acclaimed 2018 debut album, will be released in 2021.
